It is one of life's big moments, like birth, and while you have no real influence over how you are born, you can make a genuine contribution to the ceremony that celebrates your life, and/or mourns your parting, after your death or even before your death - have a party or gathering to celebrate your life with all those people who you hold dear.

This has to be preferable to leaving everything to some total stranger, who takes on the job because those who know you are too distressed to do it, or really are not sure what you would have wanted.
